Two Freedom Fighters of Patiala Honored on the Anniversary of Quit India Movement

Punjab(Patiala, August 9) : Today, on the 79th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, two freedom fighters from Patiala district who had contributed to the movement were honored. A  97-years-old S. Mohkam Singh residing at village Vada Arai Majra near Sanori Adda, who was imprisoned by the British for nine months, and S. Pritam Singh, of Muradpur on Rajpura Road and now in his ninties, has remained in jail for a year during the Quit India Movement, were visited by the  SDM  Patiala S. Charanjit Singh to their homes and honored them.

       Recalling his old times,  Mohkam Singh said that he lived in Chakk No. 120, Lyallpur district of Pakistan before the partition of the country,  was sent to imprisonment in Lahore Jail by the Britishers, on August 9, 1942. Earlier, his father Jathedar Waryam Singh had also undergone imprisonment by the British in the 1919.

        Similarly, S.  Pritam Singh said that he was arrested at the age of 9 during the Quit India Movement with a group from his village, Chakk 445, District Lyallpur.  He said he was sentenced to one year in prison.  Both the freedom fighters said that they had migrated to Punjab after the independence of the country.

        After honoring the both freedom fighters, on behalf of the Government of India, Punjab Government and the district administration, SDM Patiala, Mr Charanjit Singh said that it was due to the great sacrifices of such patriots that we are enjoying the warmth of freedom, today.  He said, “Punjab government under the leadership of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh salutes to all the freedom fighters who laid down their lives to make our country free from the yoke of Britishers.” Terming these freedom fighters, Baba Mohkam Singh and Pritam Singh as living legends, he said that we feel obliged and thankful to them for their zeal with which they participated in the independence struggle and contributed a lot to make our nation free.
